Iris Associates, Studio and Offices, Sheffield

In this project, two listed Victorian buildings were amalgamated and extensively remodelled to provide 300mē of office and studio space for Iris Associates, a prominent graphic design company. The project is situated within a run-down post industrial area of Sheffield and has been instrumental in the on-going regeneration of the area.

The character of the existing buildings has been largely retained internally. The original brickwork and timbers were cleaned and renovated and a new roof and sash windows were introduced. The new programme for the buildings was established through the design of furniture and lighting systems - pristine, tonally neutral pieces whose scale establishes a dialogue with the scale and raw material quality of the found space. A restrained palette of laminated ply, stainless steel and white volume is employed throughout the office and studio spaces. The reception space is richer, here the room become plastered and abstracted, with the insertions taking on a materiality; the ply edge becomes stacked as volume and surface, colour is employed and limestone replaces the natural linoleum floor used elsewhere. The lighting system was designed in collaboration with Minds Eye lighting designers and inspired their 'white goods' range, now in production.
