Bridgwater Masterplan
Residential Masterplan, Bridgwater, Somerset
This masterplan, for the Gerber Juice Company and Dorrington PLC is for a 6 hectare brownfield site at the edge of Bridgwater town centre, Somerset. The proposals follow Gerbers relocation to new premises and are being developed to provide a settlement of 360 new homes. The scheme responds to varying adjacent contexts by the use of urban and suburban housing typologies. Terraced mews houses continue the grain of Victorian streets to the east while larger houses and villas line the principle circulation routes, responding to the looser grain of the northern and western edges of the site.
The layout is based on a simple landscape strategy and hierarchy of public open space connecting to the surrounding street pattern. A central green provides the principal amenity space whilst also improving the sustainable drainage of the site. An urban square offers a focus for commercial and community facilities and a number of residential garden mews provide smaller scale space.
