Carlow Gallery and Festival Space, Carlow, Ireland
This project establishes a space for large scale travelling exhibitions of
contemporary art, complementing the permanent collection of Irish
Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.
It also provides a home for the
annual Eigse festival, Ireland's largest arts festival. The idea of festival
became a powerful generating idea - encompassing the moment of
collective celebration and a heightened sense of the everyday. We
understood this as appropriate both in terms of the annual festival
and also in the act of representation through the making of art. The
building established grounds for this to occur, weaving, interlocking
and overlapping at various scales and in a temporal sense, allowing
for change over time.
Conceived as operating between city and landscape, it establishes
relationships between a series of internal and external spaces of
various scales, including those, which already exist. At a larger scale
it offers the opportunity for the city to reconnect with its history and
the wider landscape in which it sits.
