Arhus Kunstmuseum, Arhus, Denmark

The practice were runners up in the open international competition for the new Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark. This £25 million project was for a 15,500m² gallery building which was intended to form the centrepiece of the city's expanding cultural quarter. The entry was selected from 120 competitors, including proposals from internationally respected architects such as Kisho Kurakawa, Jo Coenen, Hani Rashid and Henning Larsen, to become the only non-Danish submission in the second stage shortlist of 5.

The proposal concentrated on making a permeable building, responsive to its environment and city context, while at the same time providing a suitable container for a precious and fragile collection. This was achieved through the creation of a dialogue between a rectilinear gallery volume and a more dynamic city edge which housed the temporary exhibition and public foyer spaces. These pieces are brought together through a remodelled landscape which ties the building into the wider cultural quarter and initiates a route that offers the visitor a journey through the entire complex.

The project was runner up in the second stage to Schmidt Hammer Lassen.
